Helix Jump — It Takes A Ball To Play It
- 2019-11-04
Helix Jump by Voodoo is a physics-based game for mobile platforms. As you begin Level 1, you will soon progress to Level 94, without even realizing how much time has passed. The secret behind this game is its simplicity and tranquility.
Graphics and Sound 8/10
You don't get much of audiovisuals in Helix Jump, except for a courageous and energetic tiny ball and the platforms it bounces on. However, this visual scarcity is compensated by the game's excellent physics. As you play, you literally feel how springy and rubbery the audacious ball is.
Especially rewarding is the moment when one of the platforms gets smashed. Its smithereens beautifully fling in different directions, giving you a good chunk of moral satisfaction. After all, destruction can be aesthetic too!
Every level dictates its own mood through its color palette. There'll be serene peach color, optimistic sunny yellow, meditative deep violet, chilly ice blue, and so forth. The ball changes its color to match each level as well, leaving a smudge on a platform it touched.
Controls 7/10
The game's controls are quite elementary. Just press your finger against the touchscreen and glide it left/right to rotate the treacherous platforms. All you need to be successful in HJ is a quick reaction.
Gameplay 9/10
Helix Jump is simple and tricky at the same time. Your mission here is to help the bouncy ball, that keeps falling down, reach the bottom of each level. This can be done by manipulating a series of platforms. Every platform has a gap, so you should rotate it until the ball goes right through it.
The more platforms the ball avoids touching while falling down, the bigger the score you get eventually. Additionally, non-stop falling grants you a one-time super-power: the ball gains momentum and smashes a platform, in case one of them pops up on its way down.
Beware of red segments on the platforms though. They are the danger zones and bumping into one of them means instant death. Either you need a ninja reaction or you can collect a power-boost that makes your ball an invincible juggernaut for about 2 seconds. It looks like two green arrows pointing downwards.
Lasting Appeal 9/10
Helix Jump perfectly follows its motto: Harder than it seems. In the beginning, you'll be restarting game quite a lot, unless you have Naruto's reaction and a card shark's agile fingers. And despite austere level design and lack of daily/weekly challenges, Helix Jump never loses its refreshing qualities.
Verdict
Helix jump is a simple, yet addictive game. Be careful about your time-management: if you start playing it, you may realize later that you've spent 1,5 hours, partaking in adventures of a resilient tiny ball.
